Elvis was being a butt-head(I say that very lovingly), and ripping into the pillows on the couch. After I swatted him down for the third time, I told him if he scratched those pillows once more I was putting in a time out.
Clever cat that he is, he stopped clawing at the couch cushions and moved on to my great grandmother's antique chair. Butt-head.

Could he be any more adorable...he was probably just stretching Mom...
More like Turkey-buut-head. Obstinate is a MAJOR Maine Coon trait. I know - every week I pull about 15 rings from the milk jug out from under my stove and throw them out. Somehow Reilly finds them in the trash and jams them back under the fridge. I have been losing that battle for the past 5 years.
Double Stick Tape! Everywhere!! They have special extra expensive, but extra extra wide stuff at the pet stores just for the bad little kitty's like yours. It really really works! Cured our two of their scratching habits. Just don't forget to take it off when you have company.
My sister told me to pick my cats up every time I catch them scratching something and place their paws on their scratching post. Also, put a little bit of catnip on the scratching post. It does help. They really attack that scratching post
Hehe, such a smart boy! Elvis, you are an economical and handsome kitty.
Funny Boy! Has Elvis been talking to my cats by any chance? We have scratch pads and scratching posts all over the house, but of course our cats also prefer to use the antique chair that my late mother-in-law had given my husband before she died.
And you know he knows better!!!! If he's anything like my girls, he'll look at you while he's doing it just waiting to be reprimanded. Sometimes I can't help but laugh.
His back paw is huge! He really has grown into a handsome and clever young man.
The other day my youngest cat picked up an area rug in his teeth and attempted to run off with it. What can you do but shake your head?
I broke my furniture-scratcher of the habit with a post of her own. When your cats are sitting around it, but not scratching, you go up to it and scratch it yourself. The sound of your nails on the post gets them thinking about it. It's like yawning that way.
A few thoughts, Cori.
I did two things to get my cat to understand why I yelled at him and in general acted like a maniac when he scratched. First, I got some spray (pink spray can, cat on front, don't remember the brand) and sprayed the furniture. Then I got him some sisal floor covering, which he took to quickly. The only time he gets the furniture now is when he is "upset" with me, the little brat.
